Did you know that in recent years, a study conducted by the FDIS (Fire Door Inspection Scheme) discovered over 75% of fire doors it inspected over the course of a year were condemned as “not fit for purpose”?
By not keeping your fire doors well maintained, you are putting yourself, your employees and your business at risk.
Fire doors are pieces of lifesaving equipment, just like fire extinguishers and smoke alarms, and therefore require regular maintenance to keep performing to the best of their ability.
The consequences of fire door negligence have proved time and time again to be fatal. In 2017, propped-open fire doors and inadequate maintenance meant a fire in Grenfell Tower, London, quickly tore through the building and claimed 72 lives. In 2010, a fire engulfed a building in Shanghai, and inadequately maintained fire doors meant they offered little resistance to contain the fire, claiming another 58 lives and numerous injuries.
In a survey carried out on the general public, it was found that over half (57%) couldn’t spot a problem with a fire door, leading to a failure to report issues. The survey of 2,000 UK adults found that while awareness over factors that might prevent a fire door performing properly in the event of a fire is high, most people couldn’t identify a faulty fire door. This alarming research indicates a real problem in the workplace.
Unfortunately, you never know when disaster may strike, so by looking after your doors now, you could save lives in the future.
What the law states:
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states that fire doors should be checked every 6 months to ensure they are still fit for purpose. It is suggested that this time frame is reduced to 3 months for doors that get a lot of use. The Fire Safety Order also states that all fire doors should be “subject to a suitable system of maintenance and maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order, and in good repair.” It is also important that fire risk assessments are in place to determine what to do in the case of an emergency, and there is adequate training in place for staff.
